2013 captain predictions
Although there are several players that could easily step up as a captain or assistant captain, there are certain players that stand out to me.
Jamie Benn. With the potential to stay in Dallas for years to come, he is my choice for the new captain of the Stars. Being 24 years of age, he is also less likely to have off-ice issues as a 20-22 year old such as Seguin, or Dillon.
- Stephane Robidas. Robidas is a solid defenseman and leader for other defensemen. He helped Dillon adjust to the NHL, and will do the same with the other defensemen for the Stars.
- Ray Whitney. Although this may be one of Whitney’s final seasons in the NHL, his experience that he brings can’t go unnoticed. He will continue to teach younger forwards the ways of the NHL through his patience with the puck and lessons he has learned throughout his years with the Dallas Stars and several other teams.
- Brenden Dillon. I believe that Dillon will be the third assistant captain for the Dallas Stars. He made significant strides to be a dominant player last season, and with that he will motivate other young players to do the same. At only the age of 22, he and Benn could remain as captains for the next decade.
The only assistant captain I feel that could be replaced would be Ray Whitney. With him being pretty far into his career, he may opt out of carrying a leadership responsibility as big as being assistant captain for another season. In this situation I could see Antoine Roussel or Tyler Seguin stepping up as young leaders.
In any of the above scenarios, I believe the Dallas Stars are in a great situation. They still have other experienced players that will go under the radar. Newly acquired Sergei Gonchar and Rich Peverley also come with years of NHL experience that will help out some younger players adapt to the NHL. With tons of leaders in the dressing room, players such as Cody Eakin, Valeri Nichushkin, and Lane Macdermid will be able to continue with the momentum that they picked up last season after receiving lots of playing time with the Dallas Stars.
