The much anticipated New York Jets training camp is officially underway. All eyes will be on quarterbacks Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith as the two will battle all camp for the starting quarterback job.
Rex Ryan stated yesterday that he would like to come to a decision on who the starter is sooner rather than later. The play of the New York Jets’ quarterback can very well determine Ryan’s future with the organization. Ryan is very much on the hot seat after struggling to make the playoffs the past two seasons.
Braylon Edwards wasn’t scared to voice his opinion about the quarterback battle. Edwards spoke very highly of Smith and is impressed by the rookie so far. Edwards said Smith has great motivation and that “he came here to start.” Edwards was just resigned by the Jets earlier this week to ease the absence of Santonio Holmes.
With the first day of camp in the books the Jets saw some good things from players but also received bad news. Wide receivers Stephen Hill and Clyde Gates drew praise from Ryan after having an impressive outing catching the football. Kellen Winslow had a nice day catching the football as well and Ryan was happy with the speed he saw on defense.
Despite a good first day from some players their were some hiccups for the Jets. Cornerback Aaron Berry tore his ACL and will miss the entire season after colliding with Joseph Collins during a passing drill. Also newly acquired running back Chris Ivory did not practice due to tightness in his hamstring. Running back Mike Goodson was not in camp and Ryan said he does not know if Goodson will be with the Jets at any point in the season.
The biggest news out of camp Friday involved wide receiver Santonio Holmes. Holmes said he does not know if he will play for the Jets this season, Holmes is rehabbing his season ending Lisfranc injury and has not been cleared to play yet. The Jets hope Holmes will be available week one although it seems unlikely. Holmes has never dealt with an injury and said he is taking it one day at a time
