The Chicago White Sox started off the week very well, sweeping a three game series against the New York Yankees amidst Alex Rodriguez’s controversial return to Major League play. However, the Sox ended up losing three out of four to the Minnesota Twins over three days. Still, the White Sox ended up having their first winning week since May 20-26.
Alex Rodriguez received a rousing boo from the South Side faithful in his return from injury back to the Yankee lineup. He singled in his first at bat but the White Sox jumped all over Yankee starter Andy Pettitte, tagging him for seven runs. Sox starter Jose Quintana dominated the Yankee lineup and earned the win Monday night.
Chris Sale pitched the second game of the Yankee series and earned his seventh win of the season in a 3-2 squeaker. Although Sale won the outing, the Sox continue to find it difficult to score the tough-luck starter many runs forcing Sale to continue to pitch nearly flawless in order to garner a victory.
The Minnesota Twins series saw the White Sox revert back to their old ways of managing to lose games rather than winning. The White Sox were swept in the series opening double-header on Friday. Twins first baseman Justin Morneau’s two home runs helped power the Twins to the victory in the afternoon game. The Twins ended up taking the evening series behind outstanding pitching. The bullpen for the Twins pitched 3 and 1/3 innings, stymieing Sox bats and allowing only one hit and no walks over that time.
The Sox bullpen proved to be the difference on Saturday holding down the Twins to the four runs surrendered by Sox starter Andre Rienzo. The bullpen surrendered only one walk and one hit over 3 and 2/3 innings.
On Sunday, the White Sox lost to the Minnesota Twins on a pair of fifth inning home runs. The Sox ended up losing 5-2, with Adam Dunn and Conor Gillaspie going deep for the South Siders with two solo shots.
The upcoming week features more AL Central division games against the Detroit Tigers at U.S. Cellular Field and another four game set in Minnesota against the Twins.
