A week ago the UNC Football season began, as the Tar Heels took on the Gamecocks on the road, losing to them 27 to 10. Now, a week later, head coach Larry Fedora and his squad ready themselves for the first home game of the 2013 campaign.
While for most this is a game against Middle Tennessee State, for the man at the helm it’s a bit more, as coach Fedora got his first offensive coordinator job with the Blue Raiders from `99 to `01. Meaning that the up tempo offense we are enjoying in Chapel Hill began over a decade ago in Murfreesboro, TN.
But the connection between MTSU and the UNC Football coaching staff goes past just the head coach. The Heels’ OC, Blake Anderson, coached with the Blue Raiders from `02 ro `04, while Walt Bell (recruiting coordinator/tight end coach) and Luke Paschall (graduate assistant) both played in Murfreesboro.
And while none of this will matter when North Carolina hosts Middle Tennessee State in Kenan this Saturday, with kickoff being at 12:30 pm EST, it is somewhat intriguing how much attachment there is between these two programs.
Here are some more things that you might want to know about the Tar Heels’ opponent for this week…
Middle Tennessee State’s web site is… Go Blue Raiders.
MTSU’s head coach is Rick Stockstill. The Blue Raiders’ program has been his first head coaching job, and he is 44 and 44 with the Blue Raiders, who play in Conference USA. One of those wins came at the expense of Georgia Tech, who Middle Tenn St. defeated 49 to 28. A team that then beat Carolina 68 to 50.
MTSU plays in Johnny “Red” Floyd Stadium, which has a capacity of 30,788 and is made of synthetic turf.
