The Southern Miss football team will be traveling to Boise, Idaho to face the Boise State Broncos on Saturday. The Broncos, who recently lost to Fresno State, have started the season 2-2 but neither of their losses have been on their blue turf. The Golden Eagles will have overcome the mystique of Bronco Stadium, as well as a high scoring offense. Saturday, Sept. 28 at 10:15p.m., the Golden Eagles will be looking to end their 15-game losing streak, but victory looks unlikely versus a high-powered Broncos offense.
Head coach Todd Monken and the staff spent much of last week correcting mistakes that the team was making. Keeping turnovers to a minimum is one way for the Eagles to win a game they are not suppose to win. Another key to an upset is ball control.
Quarterback Allan Bridgford is among the top passers in passing statistics in the conference, which includes passing yards and interceptions. Bridgford will have to set the tone early and often in order for the Eagles to have a chance.
While turnovers have been detrimental to the team. The obvious Achilles’ heel has been the running game. Running back Jalen Richard is the team’s leading rusher with 115 yards through 3 games. The team as a whole has zero rushing touchdowns. The rushing game needs to get going to help the offense become less predictable.
The Southern Miss defense has not had the chance to show what they can really do since opening week versus Texas State. The defense has routinely had to defend short fields. They are allowing 337 yards per game with 34 points per game to go along with it. As a whole, the defense only has one interception. Creating turnovers is a key to winning and a great way to help a struggling offense. Southern Miss may be in luck as the Broncos running backs have struggle to hold on the ball as of late.
The front four will need to get after Boise State quarterback Joe Southwick, who is completing over 70 percent of his passes, and leads one of the most potent offenses in the nation. The Golden Eagles’ defense will have its hands full. Last week, the Broncos racked up 561 total yards on 100 plays only to lose by one point.
The Broncos’ defense was torched by Fresno State’s Derek Carr and the Bulldog offense. I am sure that the Southern Miss staff has studied that film thoroughly- it provides the bllueprint for how to beat this defense. Golden Eagle fans are hopeful that coach Monken flexes his offensive IQ. Why would the fans expect anything less? He’s had an extra week to prepare.
To have a chance to win, the Eagles will need to score well over their average of just over 10 points per game. This could turn out to be a trap game if and only if Boise State is overlooking the Golden Eagles.
The Broncos will win this one. I believe their offense will put up close to 50 points. Southern Miss will need to play close to perfect and fix the mistakes they’ve had in the last 15 games to compete for four quarters. I do not see the Southern putting up very many points, but in college football anything is possible.
