What an amazing day to be a Cleveland sports fan. It’s happened Cleveland! Your Cleveland Indians have made it to the postseason.
October here we come! The Browns win and move to 2-2 beating the cross-state rival Bengals, and the Indians clinch a playoff berth with a win over Minnesota for their 92nd victory of the season.
This post isn’t an article. Or a typical isportsweb post. It is a celebration. I have been a die-hard Cleveland sports fan all my life and I have never had a day as exciting as this!
The Cleveland Browns played a defensive masterpiece against the Cincinnati Bengals while the Indians played their final game of the regular season, in hopes of clinching the Wild Card spot. And with a 5-1 victory over the Twins, they did just that.
The victory gave the Indians sole possession of the first Wild Card spot, meaning they will host the winner of the Rangers vs Rays play-in game on Wednesday. The Indians have just announced that Wednesday’s game is in fact a sellout.
The Indians (92-70) avoided what could have been (for them) a dreaded two or even three team tie atop the wild-card standings. Which could have resulted in the Indians playing one or two more games just to get into the playoffs. Major League Baseball and its TV affiliates would have loved it. The Indians are happy not to have obliged.
The Indians have been on fire, winning their last 10 games of the season and playing almost perfect baseball. Winning the last 10 games helped them crawl out from the race to actually winning the first wild card spot and home field advantage in what ended up to be a absolutely insane AL Wild Card race.
The Indians are in the postseason for the first time since 2007 and hope that this team can get to the World Series, where as the 2007 club lost to Boston in the ALCS who were under the direction of none other than Terry Francona.
