This weeks’ record…2-2. Overall my record stands at 45-5…my best pick of the week was Illinois beating Miami (OH) 38-17 and they won 50-14. My worst had to be the Gophers beating Iowa….when Iowa actually handled Minnesota quite easily 23-7.
Illinois-50 Miami (OH)-14…..CORRECT….This is what Illinois should be doing…blowing out the worst team in FBS. Oh and make no mistakes folks…Miami is awful. They looked completely overwhelmed at Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon. One item of interest (and believe me folks, sometimes these are difficult to come up with) was upon scoring the Illini’s second TD of the day, head coach Tim Beckman decided to go for the two point conversion…couldn’t really figure that one out…thankfully it didn’t come into play. Illini QB Nathan Scheelhaase was 19-24 for 278 yards one interception and five TD passes.
Northern Illinois-55 Purdue-24…..CORRECT….The Huskies have done something in 2013 that no other MAC team has ever done…and that is beat two Big Ten teams in the same season…remember that they opened the season by beating Iowa in Kinnick Stadium. The Boilermakers seem to be regressing as the season goes on. They were very sloppy…too many penalties and unforced errors to beat a team that is as good as Northern Illinois is. Purdue fans could tell too…head coach Darrell Hazell yanked the starting QB Rob Henry and replaced him with a true freshman before halftime….I will guarantee you one thing this week regarding the Boilers…they will not lose….(they have a bye)
Iowa-23 Minnesota-7….MISS….The Gophers laid the biggest egg on Saturday in Big Ten country. They had many of us buffaloed…well at they had at least me buffaloed. I looked at this game as which of these two teams could stay out of the cellar in the Legends division and possibly ruin the season for one of the four contenders above them. Well…that was proven…I can’t tell if I am more surprised by Iowa’s play or disappointed in Minnesota’s. When push came to shove on Saturday afternoon at TCF Bank Field…the Hawkeyes showed up and pushed the Gophers all over the field. They were more physical, they executed better and they had a better defense. That may just be Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz’s best win in a year….from here on out though, W’s are going to be tough to come by for these two teams. Their schedules are the stuff nightmares are made of.
Ohio State-31 Wisconsin-24….CORRECT….17 straight for the Buckeyes…and now they are on cruise control until the BCS bids come out in December. There is no team, on paper, that can hang with the talent the Buckeyes have….that being said…the back-breaking moment for this came with five seconds left in the first half. OSU led 17-14 and Braxton Miller fired a 40 yard TD pass to give the Buckeyes a 10 point halftime lead. The Buckeyes never really appeared to be threatened….even when the Badgers closed to within 3 with under two minutes to go in the first half. There are certainly some weaknesses in the Buckeyes…but they are so small and can be covered up with a stellar defensive line and one of the better groups of LB’s in the Big Ten it will take a Herculean effort to beat Ohio State this year.
