It’s October 1st, and we are getting ever closer to the beginning of the season for the Duke Blue Devils. This means it’s just a couple of weeks until Countdown to Craziness, and a few weeks until exhibition games. Most importantly, the first game of the season is exactly five weeks and three days away.
October 1st signifies a bunch of changes that alert everyone to the beginning of basketball season. The weather gets colder, the leaves start to fall, people start putting out pumpkins, but really those are all signs for any basketball season. It’s obvious why we made the transition from turnips to pumpkins: because the pumpkin looks like a basketball. Another sign of basketball season is that most of the leaves turn to orange in October in the spirit of basketball season. Lastly, we turn to inside sports such as basketball because of how cold the weather gets.
It’s the time of year when we can have basketball take us until spring. It picks us up when the weather gets cold and dark. It gives everyone hope for the year, and by the time it ends it gets warm enough to spend as much time outside to forget that basketball will be gone another 6 months. This is why when October 1st comes around we get excited all over again, because before we know it we will be waiting for another season to roll around.
For Duke fans, it gives another year hoping what could be. This year it gives them a chance to get beyond the crushing defeat from the Elite Eight last year against Louisville. This time of year gives every team hope and a new start. Whether it is winning their conference or getting a number one seed in the NCAA tournament, every goal is achievable and each team can start building to those goals. It’s the second greatest time of the year to be a basketball fan, only March Madness can trump this!
This season should be an exciting year with so many stories coming in. There is Kentucky; they will be the story of the year no matter how they do. Another story line is an incoming freshman class with the potential to be one of the best classes since 2003. This season will be exciting for every college basketball fan.
As for the Duke Blue Devils, it should be another exciting season with high expectations. They do have senior leaders on the team and a young starting lineup. The Blue Devils will look to exceed what they did last year and get past the Elite Eight this season. With the first game for Duke against Davidson on November 8th we can start the countdown.
T-minus 39 days.
