The Philadelphia Eagles had gained more than 400 yards in each of their first 6 games of the season. On Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys held the dynamic Eagles offense to under 300 yards in their 17-3 victory.
Without DeMarcus Ware, the Cowboys were still able to keep constant pressure on the Eagles’ quarterback. Nick Foles would eventually leave the game with both a foot and head injury. However, the injury may have been a blessing in disguise, given that Foles was not doing anything that would earn himself the starting quarterback position.
Former USC quarterback Matt Barkley made his NFL debut following Foles’ departure. He would display his lack of experience by throwing three interceptions in the fourth quarter alone.
Quarterback was not the only position that experienced struggles on the Eagles offense. The offensive line continued to demonstrate more inconsistency. Following a game against a solid Tampa Bay defense, in which the Bucs’ defensive line was held in check, the injury riddled Cowboys’ defensive line was able put numerous hits on both Foles’ and Barkley.
Now, the Eagles are thin at quarterback. The team is hopeful that Michael Vick’s return to the field comes in week 8, but it is difficult to predict when an aggravated hamstring is going to be healed.
Because of Vick’s absence, teams are not as worried about a quarterback scampering into the end zone when the Eagles are inside their opponent’s 20 yard line. Vick, although turnover-happy at times, brings an element to the game that is hard to come by. Not only does his speed allow him to flourish as a quarterback, but it also has an effect on the entire offense. LeSean McCoy is less of a priority for opposing defenses and receivers are allowed more time to get open when Vick is in at quarterback.
It does not help that the NFC East is beginning to pick up as well. The Redskins defeated the Chicago Bears in a high scoring bout on Sunday, and the Giants captured their first win of the season over the Vikings. The Eagles will face another division rival next Sunday, as we hit the halfway point in the season. The Eagles defeated the Giants 36-21 at MetLife Stadium back in week 5.
