The New York Giants face a dilemma with wide receiver Hakeem Nicks this season, and that is his upcoming free agency. There have been rumors of teams interested in trading for the young wide receiver from North Carolina. Should the Giants dish him?
Nicks is only 25 and he is a number one receiver talent in the NFL. Before Victor Cruz exploded on to the scene, Nicks was the Giants’ top receiver. He can go to any team and become a number one receiver again.
The Giants should try to resign him, but there is worry that he would ask for a deal that matches the five year, $43 million that Cruz got. He could even ask for more than the $43 million, and the Giants are struggling with cap space. With all the issues they have to address, they may have to free cap space where they can.
There are a lot of big names that could potentially be free agents. Some of those names are Maurice Jones-Drew, Jimmy Graham, Jared Allen, and Brian Orakpo. All these players can address major issues for the Giants. There will probably be some quality offensive linemen out there as well.
The Giants may not free up enough space to land a big free agent, but they can get some good quality starters and support guys. The Giants will have to rely on the draft as well to help fix their team. If the Giants stay within the top 5 picks of the draft, they will most likely get Jadeveon Clowney, and he can more than replace Justin Tuck. There are also some receivers they can draft who would be able to come in and be the third or fourth receiver.
If the Giants are going to trade Nicks they have to get draft picks in return. There is talk that Atlanta would give a third round pick for Nicks. Atlanta is looking to get another young receiver to replace Julio Jones, who is out for the season. There is also rumors that the Colts might make the move as well, in order to replace the loss of Reggie Wayne. Other teams might also look to trade for Nicks, but the Giants have to get the best deal possible. They can’t just let Hakeem Nicks walk and get nothing in return if they don’t plan to resign him.
