The New York Jets defeated the New England Patriots last week 30-27 in overtime, but the 56-yard field goal Nick Folk missed in overtime is still bringing about controversy.
Nick Folk set up for the 56-yard field goal and missed, but the Patriots were flagged when Chris Jones pushed Will Svitek in the back to try and give him an advantage to block the field goal. A couple plays later, Folk kicked a 42-yard field goal to win the game for the Jets. The win snapped the Patriots 6-game regular season win streak over the Jets.
This week Bill Belichick and Rex Ryan addressed the flag once again. Belichick claimed that the Jets performed the same penalty throughout the game but were not flagged for it. Rex Ryan shot back saying Belichick’s comments were not true and that he (Ryan) was aware of the rule and that the Patriots were constantly doing it. Film from the Patriots week 6 win over the New Orleans Saints showed that the Patriots performed the same infraction but were not flagged for it. The Patriots won that game 30-27.
Either way, the hatred the two coaches have for each other has only grown over time. Ryan, who’s job was on the line at the start of the season, has led the Jets to a (4-3) record. With a win last week over Belichick and the Patriots, Ryan might have proved he is worthy of a contract extension for next season.
Santonio Holmes and Jeff Cumberland missed practice Wednesday and their status for Sunday is still uncertain.
The Jets have decided to keep David Garrard and cut Brady Quinn. Brady Quinn has been signed by the St. Louis Rams.
The Jets face Cincinnati this week in hopes to win back-to-back games for the first time all season.
