To be honest I thought there’d be more to talk about at this point in the bye week. Since the roster has been at 52 for about a week now, I figured if GM Ryan Grigson was to make a move it would be during this week, but it looks like that won’t happen.
It seems he is looking to make a viable trade and is asking around the league for a skilled receiver at a fair price. He will probably not find a good deal and most likely end up promoting a practice squad player. Or he’ll decide to pull the trigger on a risky deal. Either way, we should know what happens by the trade deadline on Tuesday.
Some names I have heard being tossed around in a potential trade include: Santonio Holmes, Hakeem Nicks, Josh Gordon, Vincent Jackson and Justin Blackmon. Understand that this is pure speculation and there hasn’t really been any confirmable rumors.
Jackson is a big target at 6-foot-5 and he uses his body well. And we all saw what Luck could potentially do with a big bodied receiver in the pro bowl last year when he had a connection with the Bengals’ A.J. Green. Jackson is also the most experienced of the group and, even though Reggie Wayne will be in the locker room post surgery, the Indianapolis Colts could use leadership for their wide receiver corps.
The other two veterans, Holmes and Nicks, have problems of their own. Holmes is barely ever on the field as he has injury issues and Nicks has been asking for a king’s ransom after season’s end. However, as I stated in my previous article, I wouldn’t mind Nicks on a one year rental so long as we only give up a late round pick. Because how often do those picks even make the roster? I can tell you that it’s very rarely.
Gordon and Blackmon are the young guys in the rumor talks. And I really like Blackmon as a Reggie Wayne replacement specifically. He runs good routes and catches the ball well and knows how to use his strong body. Gordon is a great deep threat with very good physical attributes, something that can’t be taught. Either way we would have to give up a high draft pick and I don’t see the Colts losing another early rounder after already spending a first on Trent Richardson.
Besides the hoopla around the empty roster spot there isn’t really much to talk about. The Colts had the week off and are heading into a Sunday night matchup against the division rival Houston Texans. The Texans have a new, rookie quarterback under center and we’ll see how he’ll hold up against a, so far, impressive Colts’ defense. Should be interesting. Go Colts!
