Those pesky Gophers…I had faith in them most of the season…until the Big Ten season started…then they struggle vs Iowa, get handled by Michigan, their coach steps away from the game…and now they are playing very well with a big W at home vs Nebraska…How big is that W?…we will wait and see….(can you tell which was my worst pick of the week?)…my best pick was Iowa over Northwestern..I said the final would be 28-24…when scoring was actually at a premium and the Hawks won 17-10 in OT….let’s break them down…
Minnesota-34 Nebraska-23….MISS….wow…the Gophers could do no wrong on Saturday….and they fell behind early 10-0…based on a couple things Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini said…one may conclude that his team may have been looking ahead for some reason…Saturday marked the return of Corn QB Taylor Martinez…he was playing in his first game since mid-September with a toe issue. He was less than stellar as he rushed for only 16 yards and was barely over 50% in completions at 16-30 for 139 yards. When asked about Taylor Martinez and his struggles on Saturday Pelini said “Taylor was the least of our problems”….”I don’t know whether we think we’re better than we are or what it is, but at the end of the day, we didn’t have the type of approach you have to have on the road to go win a football game”….nice quote coach, don’t take any accountability whatsoever. The story of the game was the ground attack by Minnesota. They outgained the Corn 271 to 189…which is what won the game for the Golden Gophers. The Gophers are making strides
Iowa-17 Northwestern-10 OT….CORRECT….this Iowa defense is quietly becoming one of the better units in the conference. They shut down the Wildcat offense Saturday afternoon and they did so impressively. They did allow just under 330 yards total, but they sacked the NW QB’s six times, recovered two fumbles and had 12 TFL’s…Kain Colter played well in his return…he was 11 of 14 for 104 yards and he added 60 yards rushing, but the story was the Hawkeye defense getting back to what Hawkeye defenses do….they make you one dimensional and create turnovers in big moments. The Cats have now dropped four straight games…and believe it or not, their schedule actually may get more difficult from here on out.
Michigan State-42 Illinois-3….CORRECT….Connor Cook seems to be entrenched into a groove at this point. He completed 11 straight passes en route to a 15 of 16 day for 208 yards and three TD passes as the Spartans dismantled the Fighting Illini. I heard rumblings all weekend long that Tim Beckman’s employment status with the University of Illinois could be hanging in the balance…but I would really doubt that…Michigan State is one of the better teams in the country right now and losing to them is not a sign that your program is awful….now, that being said…he probably does need to get his first Big Ten win this season…and he does play Purdue later…soooo. Ohio State-63 Penn State-14….CORRECT….The Buckeyes rushed for 408 yards on Saturday night…408 yards….Penn State amassed 357 yards total….OSU averaged 8 yards per rush…Buckeye QB Braxton Miller established a new career best of 252 passing before he left in the third quarter…even OSU backup QB Kenny Guiton rushed for two TD’s. Now OSU head coach Urban Meyer has come out and said that his team was not looking to send message and blow out the Nittany Lions…but WR Devin Smith seemed to be. He actually said “We wanted to make a statement.” Well they did..Penn State hadn’t been beaten that badly since the end of the 1800’s…
