The baseball season is officially over, and while Boston celebrates a World Series win, Cleveland is still left with a salty taste in their mouths. So close, yet so far. This offseason, many expect a wild ride from the Indians and the club has already been wheeling and dealing.
On Friday, November 1, the Cleveland Indians announced that the team exercised the 2014 club option on right hander Ubaldo Jimenez. Jimenez, who held a dual option, voided the contract, opting to become a free agent. Cleveland has until Monday to make a 2014 qualifying offer.
Also, Cleveland opted to decline the 2014 club option on outfielder Jason Kubel. Kubel is now a free agent.
The club announced they have re-signed infielder Ryan Rohlinger to a Minor League contract with a non-roster invitation to Major League Spring Training Camp in Arizona. Rohlinger, 30, spent the 2013 at Triple A Columbus where he hit .266 with 17 doubles and five home runs.
The Indians have announced the club has signed free agent right-handed pitcher J.C. Rameirez to a Minor League contract with a non roster invitation to a Major League spring training camp.
The 25-year-old Ramirez split the 2013 season between Double-A Reading, Triple-A Lehigh Valley, and the Philadelphia Phillies. In his two stints with the Phillies he posted a 0-1 record paired with a 7.50 ERA in 18 relief appearances. Ramirez elected free agency after being outrighted off the 40-man roster.
The Tribe also re-signed Jason Giambi to a Minor League contract that includes an invitation to attend Spring Training with the Major League club. It is the same deal that Giambi signed last offseason.
Finally, he Indians have also released closer Chris Perez. Perez went 5-3 with 25 saves and a 4.33 ERA in 54 games this year. He was eligible for arbitration this winter after making $7.3 million. Perez could have made between $9 million and $10 million.
In June, Perez and his wife were arrested by drug agents after a package containing a small amount of marijuana was delivered to their house. He also spent time on the disabled list with a sore right shoulder.
