Next Saturday’s Gophers versus Badgers rivalry football game is the talk of the town. For Minnesota fans this is a new trend as this year’s Gophers team has its best chance in years to knock off hated rival Wisconsin and reclaim the ax.
It’s been nine seasons since the Gophers have hoisted Paul Bunyan’s ax but the team is on a roll and nobody wants to play them right now, except for maybe Wisconsin who has won five straight. Saturday will be a great match-up of two teams with unstoppable running games. The team who rushes the ball most effectively will win the game.
A few articles ago, I talked about the Gophers reaching a New Year’s Day bowl, but winning this game could have even bigger implications for the team. How about a chance at playing in a BCS bowl? Yes, there is a chance, but the Gophers need to start by beating Wisconsin, and they can do that.
The Gophers have found a way to step up its defense and improve the passing game. I think of them as the triple threat because during this four game winning streak, each facet of the team has come up big at some point.
If the triple threat persists, the Gophers will take the ax, but if one fails to show up, primarily the rushing and defense, Wisconsin will walk away in a blowout win. The Badgers also have one of the best defenses in the nation, but the dynamic Gophers have the game-plan to put up points on anyone.
Both teams need this win desperately. It’s hard to choose a winner, but I am going to predict that the Gophers win 27-24 in front of their home crowd. The victory would be sweet, but this is the toughest game for the Gophers yet. If one part of the team doesn’t show up on Saturday, Wisconsin will win its 10th game in a row versus Minnesota.
