The Yellow Submarine endured the hefty jeers of the San Sebastian just long enough to carry the fixture back home to the Madrigal.
Mexican counterparts Carlos Vela and Giovani Dos Santos both saw action in the scoreless draw.
The Basque side was unable to capitalize at home and will now be forced to attain a win away from home. The first leg fixture turned out to be equally matched. Mexican internationals Giovani Dos Santos and Javier Aquino both started in attack for Villarreal while Carlos Vela was left on the bench.
Sociedad and Villarreal shared opportunities back and forward. The Yellow Submarines greatest chance came at the 33 minute when Aquino filtered a clever pass to Jonathan Pereira leaving him one on one with the keeper, but Pereira was unable to finish.
Sociadad’s best chance came at the 61st minute of the match when french striker Antoine Griezmann made a clever run behind the defense but looked astonished to the fact he was onside and alone with the keeper, with little time to react he shot at goal but was blocked as well.
Vela came in late in the match as a sub and had an opportunity to score the winner on a cross from Griezmann, but Vela’s attempt to poke in the cross was easily handled by the Villarreal keeper. The tie will be all square for the second leg in a fixture that could go to either side.
The Yellow Submarine most likely satisfied with the draw will hope to punish Sociedad back home in the Madrigal.
