With a redshirt freshman year of training in his past, Antravious Simmons looks to be the player to watch. Simmons has been one of the most dedicated players since his redshirt status went into effect last year. He has experienced the sweat, tears, wins and losses with VCU. Simmons, after watching all this from the sidelines, will be coming off the bench with extra passion. Most players who earn their position and have that experience of being on the bench just watching, appreciate their spot just that little bit more.
Simmon’s hard work has bulked him up to 250 pounds. Being that he’s 6-9, his size is a huge advantage for the Rams. Simmons utilizes his body very well as he has no problem running the floor. VCU fans will probably be amazed by his ability to keep the team scoring. Simmons averaged 18 PPG his senior year. When he has the ball he is scoring and if he doesn’t have the shot, he’s giving the ball to someone who does. VCU will be able to thrive on his strong force under the basket as his ball handling skills are quick and accurate. Simmons will be able to move the ball at havoc speed and use his strength to open up the floor for the havoc plays.
Reddic, VCU’s beloved center graduated last season. With his 8.4 reb/game gone, the Rams need someone to fill this void. Simmons is just the man for the job as he averaged 15 reb/game his senior year of high school. He also averaged 4 blocks/game, proving his great defensive game. Simmons also has a skill that’s hard to develop. He’s very patient on the court. Many players attack too soon and miss opportunities or lose the ball. Simmons has the ability to let the game to come to him which then enables him to run the court and make things happen.
A year of training with the VCU coaching staff complete, Simmons will likely be one of the most exciting players to watch next season. His face will probably be blown up and added to the collection of distraction faces in the crowd.
