In the past couple of seasons Colin Kaepernick of the San Francisco 49ers dazzled us with his play making ability and his rocket for an arm. He has had great games both passing and running the ball including an NFL record for rushing for a quarterback with 181 yards in a wildcard game against the Packers two years ago. The potential looked to be sky high after being a couple of completed passes away from winning a Superbowl and going to another one and the 49ers went ahead and gave the young star a 100 million dollar contract. Now in year three, everything has come to a screeching halt.
As of right now the 49ers are struggling especially on offense and not only do they have to go 4-0 to finish the season but they also need some help in order to make the playoffs. Defensively, the 49ers have been as dominant as ever but the offense has been absolutely terrible this season. Vernon Davis and Michael Crabtree have had down years and the offensive line looks slow and has given way too many sacks.
It all comes back to Colin Kaepernick however, his inability to make plays is costing the 49ers games. Niner fans have called for offensive coordinator, Greg Roman’s job, and although I am not going to go that far, I will say that changes need to be made. Although these changes have to be drastic ones, these are changes that the 49ers shouldn’t have to go through in the first place. There is an old saying that “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it,” and what the 49ers had was an athletic quarterback who elected to run and make plays with his legs as a primary option. He and his running backs would gash teams and when they stacked the box then he would unleash his throws. The option and the pistol formation worked well for Kaepernick but this year it has gone away. Since his new deal the 49ers have kept Kaepernick inside the pocket and his play has suffered because of it. He’s turning the ball over with more frequency, he is getting sacked way too much and now he is giving one word answers in his press conferences.
The 49ers were never a high powered offense, but they were never an offense that had trouble getting first downs like the one that was on display last week against Seattle. What Roman needs to do is to remove the shackles from the guy and let him run wild and just make plays. Start using the option more, stop throwing on first down and emphasize the checkdown pass as well. Since Kaepernick is considered the franchise quarterback maybe they don’t want him running the ball as much to prevent injury but right now is not the time to worry about the future.
Colin Kaepernick has physical gifts that other quarterbacks wish they could have so it’s crazy that those talents aren’t being used. To the 49ers coaches and staff, Kaepernick is not a prototypical quarterback and will never be one but, that’s not a bad thing at all. Instead of trying to mold him into something different why not just coach him up to be the best Colin Kaepernick.
