This was not a pretty game for Florida football. The Gators going into this game were a thirty point favorite and were favored to win the game by 98% according to ESPN. On offense to put it mildly the Gators were pathetic and flat. Not only were they 3/11 on third downs they had two turnovers one being for a touchdown allowing Florida Atlantic to tie the game.
In a game that should have been preparing them for next week against the Seminoles, the Gators created more questions than they did answers. The facts are that in the first half FAU beat Florida in total yards, rush yards and first downs. Not much changed in the second half either.
If it wasn’t for the defense coming up huge with very key turnovers in clutch moments the Gators might not be walking out of the Swamp “Where only Gators get out alive” with a victory. Without the three turnovers created by the defense it could have very well been FAU going back to Boca Raton with their first win over a top 25 AP opponent in its school history. The other area the Gators struggled was in the kicking game. Their kicker missed two short distance field goals and an extra point in overtime giving the Owls a chance to win the game.
These kind of mistakes cannot happen against teams like Florida State, Alabama, or any top ranked team in the country. Treon Harris has to be aware of where he is on the field, and know to throw it away when he cannot escape the pressure or get the ball to a receiver. Right now it’s the little things that the Gators need to work on, including getting their defense healthy with most of the them injured, and not playing in Saturday’s game.
In the end the Gators won the game, the defense came up big, and Treon Harris threw the game winning touchdown in overtime. The final score was 20-14 in overtime, but that does not mean Florida is a championship caliber team. If the Gators play this way against Florida State the result will most likely be different. However, knowing Jim McElwain as we do, Florida will practice what they struggled in with ball security and kicking field goals, and will hopefully have a better game against their rivals next week in Gainesville.
