While brand new to the sport of Formula 1 racing, Team Haas found it difficult to remain consistent after scoring the majority of their points in the first few races. In fact, all of the 29 points scored by Haas-Ferrari came from Romain Grosjean; 22 of which came within the first four races.
Driving alongside Grosjean, Esteban Gutierrez failed to score a point during the 2016 season. Gutierrez finished just outside of the points several times this season with five-11th place finishes, and found it difficult to compete with the majority of Formula 1. On top of this, his five DNF’s made it difficult for Gutierrez to have a successful season. Towards the end of 2016, Gutierrez had officially announced his departure from Haas and as not yet stated if he will be driving in Formula 1 in 2017.
It was revealed that Kevin Magnussen will be replacing Gutierrez for Haas in 2017. Although he finished in 16th place, he managed to score 7 points driving for Renault and could prove to be a great addition to the American company. Magnussen only has 3 seasons in Formula 1 but joining a new team could provide a wealth of experience that could benefit himself as well as Haas.
With several well established teams already in Formula 1, it will be difficult for Haas to compete against the likes of Mercedes and Red Bull. However, the inclusion of this new American team as well as the growing popularity of the United States Grand Prix has helped make Formula 1 more popular. The increased excitement could lead to more competition coming from Team Haas.
