The Brooklyn Nets have two games remaining this week until the All-Star break and the NBA trade deadline date. There is still uncertainty if the Nets will make a move but there has been multiple rumors surrounding players like Brook Lopez and Bojan Bogdanovic since November.
Brook Lopez, 28, is in the prime of his career and is by far the Nets’ best trade asset. Lopez isn’t a stranger to hearing rumors involving him in trade discussions. Lopez has been on the trade block for the past few years but the Nets ownership never pulled the trigger on potential deals. It is rumored that the Nets are asking teams for two first round picks for Lopez, a price that few if any would pay.
Over the past week there has been rumors that the New Orleans Pelicans are searching for another big man to pair with Anthony Davis and have had talks with the Nets and Philadelphia 76ers. News today reported by Basketball Insiders’ Michael Scotto said, the Nets have discussed a potential deal that would send Brook Lopez to the Pelicans. The rumored deal according to Scotto is a trade of Tyreke Evans, Langston Galloway, Tim Frazier and a 2018 protected first round pick for Brook Lopez.
Lopez is a proven scorer and one of the more elite big men in the NBA. Lopez is still under contract through next season and will make $22.6 million for the 2017-2018 season before becoming an unrestricted free agent.
Personally, I don’t think any team will offer two first round picks in exchange for Lopez but only time will tell. However, I do believe that this will be the year that Nets ownership will pull the trigger on the best deal for Lopez. The Nets need young assets and picks (which are all gone thanks to former GM Billy King). If moving Lopez brings in one first round pick and young players that can help the Nets, I think they will go ahead and move him.
With just 10 days remaining until the trade deadline, the rumors will continue to heat up. It will be interesting to see what moves if any are made, and what the Nets starting lineup will look like on February 24th.
