The Denver Nuggets have been quietly rising in the west. The Nuggets are coming to the midway point in the season with a 25-30 record. This may not seem like a team that you would talk about yet but for a team coming off a 33 win season last year, it’s time to talk.
The Nuggets have been playing well as of late due to the rise of power forward, Nikola Jokic. If you haven’t heard of him yet, watch the film. The 6’10 forward has been putting on a clinic.
Jokic is just 21 years old and is playing in his second year in the NBA. If you’re a viewer, you may think different about his age. The young forward is averaging 16.9 points a game and close to nine rebounds a game.
An early comparison of Jokic’s game would be to the veteran, Pau Gasol. Both players learned the international game before taking their talents to the United States. If you’re a player in your second year and being compared to an NBA champion, you must be something special.
The Nugget’s forward is a matchup nightmare. He will make his money shots next to the rim but he also gives you extra possessions. If you get him out of the lane, he will drag the defender out of the lane and get an assist or a jump shot. His skill set was on display yesterday as he posted 17 points 21 rebounds and 12 assists against the Golden State Warriors.
If you’re the Denver Nuggets, Nikola Jokic is your foundation for the organization. This guy is a rising star in the league and will make the players around him better. The Nuggets currently have many different pieces but if one or two guys start feeding off Jokic’s energy, this team will make the playoffs.
