At UFC 209, Stephen Thompson and Tyron Woodley will be settling the score. They will be concluding unfinished business from UFC 205 in which the result was a majority draw. Despite the fact that this fight is the main event and will be a great one, I’m much more excited for the fight before it. I’m much more excited for Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson.
The reason that this fight is so intriguing to me is because of a few factors.
- Both of these fighters are ridiculously good
Tony Ferguson has quickly become one of my favorite fighters in the UFC. Not only is he supremely talented, but he also has some flare to his game.
Ferguson is currently on a 10 fight win streak and in his last, and most impressive victory, he made Rafael Dos Anjos look like an amateur. Many times during the fight Ferguson seemed to toy with the past champ and was in complete control for a large majority of the fight.
Khabib, on the other hand, just continues to dominate his opponents. He currently sports a 24-0 record for his career and looked just as good as ever after his last fight against Michael Johnson.
Despite the less than impressive stand up game that Khabib has, his ground game seems to be almost unbeatable. Sometimes his fights remind me of a bear versus a human.
- The winner will be in line to fight Conor McGregor
As an avid McGregor fan, I’d be extremely excited to see the winner of this fight go up against McGregor. In the same breathe, I’d be very worried for McGregor. Either of these fighters would be the toughest test in the UFC for him.
Ferguson would be able to stand with McGregor and use his length like Nate Diaz was able to do. Khabib would be no match on the feet, but if he could get McGregor to the ground (the weakest aspect of McGregor’s game) it would be nearly lights out for the champ.
- These two don’t like each other
There’s nothing better than a fight where both fighters aren’t really fond of the other. Both have said publicly that they will win this fight and have both looked ahead to McGregor. They’ve shown that they’re not worried about the other and have continually shown a ton of confidence (heck I would too if I were them).
The two have tried to make this fight happen for years now, and have both called the other out for possibly ducking the fight. I’m hoping, with less than a week until the fight, that these two can stay healthy and we can see this clash of two of the best fighters in the UFC. Move over Thompson and Woodley, I’m ready for Khabib and Fergy.
