Southampton has done a good job of finding reinforcements this season. Manolo Gabbiadini has made quite an impression in his first month at St. Mary’s Stadium scoring 6 goals in all competitions. Martin Caceres is working his way into the first team after playing a match with the u23 squad. Per Adam Leitch of the Daily Echo, Caceres exhibited his quality on the ball and made it clear that he has played at a high level. Soon enough, Caceres will be either a substitute or a starter for the first team.
In reiteration, Southampton has made a couple fine additions this winter. But, the progress that the Saints have made has the potential to come crashing down if particular circulating trade rumors become reality.
The already depleted Southampton defense could be robbed by Barcelona. According to John Cross of Mirror Online, the Catalan giants have been impressed with Cedric Soares’s performances and are looking to make a sizeable offer for the right back. Even with Virgil Van Dijk back in action next season, losing Soares would be a blow to Southampton’s defense.
To make defensive matters worse, Southampton doesn’t even appear to be searching for defenders. Instead they are apparently keeping their eyes glued to Andre Gray as the goal scorer from Burnley’s contract is coming to an end, per Dean Jones of Bleacher Report. It’s not a bad thing to keep an eye on strikers but the Saints should keep in mind their defensive situation.
Southampton’s defensive depth is considerably shallow; if they lose another defender this summer, their focus should be on signing defensive reinforcements. Even if Soares stays at Southampton, the Saints should prioritize signing at least one defender. Southampton’s main goal right now must be to build a reliable and plentiful defense.
