Several Cincinnati Bengals players have bid Cincinnati adieu over the last few days. Leaving concerns about how the Bengals re-group in the wake of this years free agency.
Both the Bengals offense and defense have been impacted by this free agency period. Not just because of the number of players that have left, but also because of who’s left. After losing Andrew Whitworth and Kevin Zeitler last week; the Bengals lost a few more free agents earlier this week. The Bengals will also head into the 2017 season without Domata Peko, Margus Hunt and Rex Burkhead. Losing Burkhead might be the departure that stings the most for the Bengals.
Burkhead is joining the Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots. A team that could do well with an empty bottle as a tight end. Of all the players the Bengals have seen go so far; Burkhead might be the one that the Bengals will regret losing the most. After having a pretty good 2016 season with a few personal records. With a career best 344 rushing yards, plus a career best 145 receiving yards in 2016.
Meanwhile, Domata Peko is heading to the Rocky Mountains with the Denver Broncos. While Margus Hunt is heading to the Indianapolis Colts after four years with the Bengals. The Bengals are making additions though, by bringing Andre Smith back from the Minnesota Vikings. The departures might not be ones that fully derail the Bengals. Like Carlos Dunlap though, I wonder what the Bengals next step is?
The Bengals still have a fairly solid defense heading into next season. On offense the Bengals got a boost by keeping Brandon LaFell in the Queen City. Signing the wide receiver to a two year contract worth $9 million. LaFell became a great target receiver for Andy Dalton last season. Despite keeping LaFell and Dre Kirkpatrick; free agency is making the Bengals look increasingly depleted.
Some might think that this is just Mike Brown doing a lot of penny pinching. Some might also think that the Bengals are looking to reload at the NFL Draft. With the way the free agency period is going that might be the case. As the Bengals continue to deal with the March madness of this free agency period.
