The Atlanta Falcons might have made the signing of the offseason by adding defensive tackle Dontari Poe to their defensive line on a one-year $8 million deal. The Falcons had a good defensive line last season in their Super Bowl game run, but adding Poe really makes them a much better line.
Dontari Poe was not himself last season, and this is partially due to his weight gain. The Falcons have incentivized Poe to drop weight by adding clauses in his contract that pay him more money if he loses some weight. This is a prove-it deal for Poe and the Falcons were happy to give it to him.
Last season, Poe racked up 27 tackles, including 1.5 sacks and three pass deflections. Poe is a two-time Pro Bowl participant, and these appearances come as recently as 2014. He was also named Second-team All-Pro in 2013. Clearly Poe has the talent to be one of the top interior defensive linemen in the game, and because he is only on a one-year deal, he is going to want to show teams that he still has plenty left in the tank to pick up a long-term deal next season.
This deal is a big-time win for the Falcons. They get a top lineman on a one-year deal that is going to want to play hard. He will add some fire to a defense that was surprisingly very good last season. The addition of Poe will make the Falcons’ hunt for a second consecutive Super Bowl appearance a lot easier.
The Falcons can easily return to the postseason this year. The Carolina Panthers will probably be better this year after a really poor showing last season. This will mean that the Falcons will have to have a similar year to make it to the postseason again. Dontari Poe’s addition will make life a lot easier for the Falcons.
