Manchester United defeated Middlesbrough today to finally move from the sixth spot they have been stuck on for some months. United claim the fifth spot as Arsenal falls to the sixth position after losing (1-3) against West Brom Albion. Other than finally moving up the Premier League table, Manchester United became the first club to win 600 English Premier League games.
Man United defeated Middlesbrough at Old the Riverside Stadium (3-1) with goals from Marouane Fellaini, Jesse Lingard, and Antonio Valencia. United stroke first in the 30th minute after Ashley Young crossed the ball to the box and Fellaini headed it in. In the 62nd minute, Jesse Lingard scored an outside the box goal to give United a satisfying (2-0) lead. Rudy Gestede, a Middlesbrough attacker, scored after Chris Smalling failed to clear the ball. Before the final whistle, Antonio Valencia made it (3-1) after Victor Valdes slipped and gifted Valencia the goal.
United fans can finally see something positive paid off after a long streak of being sixth in the EPL. United might be in fifth place, but they also have two fewer games than Liverpool (Fourth place) and one less game than Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester City (top three). United have an enormous possibility to be in the top four and claim a spot in the Champions League. The Red Devils are also playing in the Europa League, which can also give them a spot in Europe next year. If Manchester United win the Europa League, they automatically claim a spot in next year’s Champions League. The Manchester club is gifted with two possible entries into Europe next season, and Mourinho and his men must take advantage of that opportunity.
This week, Manchester United progressed to the Europa League Quarter-Finals against Anderlecht and moved to the fifth spot in the English Premier League. Man United is still showing a lot of promise and they are capable of winning more silver wear. United was eliminated in the FA Cup by Chelsea FC last week. However, they can now solely focus on the EPL and the Europa League.
United will obviously not win the Premier League, as it looks like Conte’s Chelsea is clearly the dominating team in the Premiership. Chelsea is ten points ahead second place Tottenham, and they keep demonstrating every week there is no stopping them. The only way Chelsea would not win the EPL is if they go on a ridiculous losing streak which will not probably happen. Mourinho must keep winning important games to claim a spot in the top four. If all else fails, United must win the Europa League in order to sneak their way into the Champions League next season.
Next week, there will not be any Premier League action due to the international break. The Red Devils will face West Brom Albion at Old Trafford on April 1st.
