Real Madrid played against Atletico Madrid in a crucial game of the La Liga title. Real Madrid was attacking well most of the first half and had the clearest chance of the half. Cristiano Ronaldo made a perfect shot to avoid the hands of Goalkeeper Jan Oblak and the ball seemed destined to enter the net, but Atletico’s defender Savic made an amazing goal line clearance with his head. Real Madrid continued to attack Atletico and scored with a great cross that Toni Kroos delivered towards the head of Pepe. But after the goal, Real Madrid cooled down.
Real Madrid stopped pressuring Atletico and let them dominate the rest of the game. It was hard for Atletico to score but at the 85th minute the Real Madrid defense finally broke down and Antoine Griezmann scored the equalizer. Real Madrid could not come back and win the game like they usually do in the dying moments of the game. That draw looked very costly because they dropped two points and Barcelona could have closed the La Liga gap even more with a win against Malaga.
Real Madrid was extremely lucky that FC Barcelona played one of their worst games and did not take advantage of the opportunity Real Madrid handed to them. FC Barcelona ended up losing 2-0 against Malaga. Now Real Madrid has to face two great challenges in the upcoming weeks. They will have to play Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona. Bayern Munich is the most immediate threat. Real Madrid will face Bayern Munich in the Champions League Quarter Final on Wednesday, April 12. This will be a great test for Real Madrid because other than the fact this is one of the most important games for them in the season, this will be probably their toughest opponent yet.
Bayern Munich is one of the heavy favorites to win the Champions League and they are in first place in the German Bundesliga. They are also in recent great form. Their last game was against Borussia Dortmund, one of the best teams in Germany, and one of the remaining eight teams in the Champions League. Bayern Munich humiliated Borussia Dortmund by beating them 4-1. Bayern Munich looked extremely dangerous in convincingly beating this Dortmund squad that had tied twice against Real Madrid earlier in the season.
Bayern Munich is just like Real Madrid in the sense that both teams are very complete with several amazing bench players. The players Real Madrid need to focus on is their attacking trident, of Arjen Robben, one of the deadliest left footed shots in the world, Robert Lewandowski, one of the best strikers in the world, and Frank Ribery, one of the most creative players. Real Madrid will be hoping to hold their own on Wednesday in the Allianz arena which is one of the hardest stadiums to play for a visitor and where Bayern has an amazing home record.
Real Madrid hopes they can improve from their game against Atletico and play like they have played all season. Madrid has been outstanding throughout the season and if they can emulate that good form they will be able to replicate the last meeting they had against Bayern Munich. Real Madrid last met Bayern Munich in the Champions League semifinal in 2014 in which they beat them with an aggregate of 5-0 with both games. Real Madrid has tough games ahead but they are in control of their destiny to win the League title and the Champions League.
