UPDATE: McCoy is heading to Virginia for the Allen Iverson Roundball Classic. He still is a highly targeted MSU recruit and has not officially made his decision as to where he will play basketball next year.
The Spartans are looking to fill out the roster for the 2017-2018 basketball team and if there was one more major commit here for the 2017 class it would be Brandon McCoy. The snapchat posted on the story is below and it draws many a question as to why he is in Michigan?
The answer is hopefully to join the 2017 Michigan State Spartan class, a team that is already a serious National title contender with Miles Bridges returning for his sophomore campaign. McCoy would be the third add to the 2017 class, joining the 6’10 Jaren Jackson Jr. and the 6’8 Xavier Tillman and potentially the Mr. Basketball from the State of Illinois Mark Smith.
Could we potentially see foreshadowing into some more good news from one of the Spartan’s biggest targets? It would be an unbelievable add for Tom Izzo as well as this Spartan team and would be another big man to add to the arsenal of dominance on the inside.
The rumors are that UNLV and Michigan State are the front runners for the seven footer out of Cathedral Catholic, McCoy would have a great amount of exposure here at MSU and would be paired with playing with fantastic teammates that could make a deep run in the 2018 NCAA tournament.
As previously mentioned, the Spartans will have a great amount of bigs next season. Nick Ward, Jaren Jackson Jr., Gavin Schilling, Xavier Tillman AND potentially Brandon McCoy? We saw the Spartans make it to the second round last season with just one true power forward/center, imagine what they might be able to do with upwards of five position players.
Again, this might all just be speculation and McCoy might not commit to Michigan State. But, it would make the most sense for a player of his caliber to come and play (at least) one season under coach Izzo and learn in his system to better his own abilities and help Michigan State be an even better team than it will be come next season.
