Although it is still very early for the 2018 recruiting class, Notre Dame currently has 12 verbal commits which is currently good for the 11th best class in the country. Team rankings will obviously change quite a bit by the end of it all, but Brian Kelly and Notre Dame are off to a good start. Notre Dame’s 12 verbal commits so far include eight four-star prospects and four three-star prospects including one prospect ranked in the top 100. National signing day is not until February 7, but here is a look at four of Notre Dame’s marquee signings thus far.
Quarterback Phil Jurkovec
Phil Jurkovec is Notre Dame’s lone prospect ranked in the top 100. Jurkovec is from Gibsonia, Pennsylvania and is the 85th overall ranked prospect from the 2018 class. He has great size at 6’5.5 201lbs and runs a 4.91 40 time. He is also extremely accurate with the ball and is able to launch the ball downfield. Jurkovec is the 11th ranked quarterback prospect and the highest ranked quarterback from the midwest.
Safety Derrik Allen
Derrik Allen is from Marietta, Georgia and is the 107th overall ranked prospect. Allen has great size for a defensive back listed at 6’2 206lbs and he also possesses great closing speed. Allen likes to play physical and is capable of defending both the run and the pass. He has enormous potential to develop into a premier safety for the Fighting Irish. He is the 11th ranked safety overall and number one in the state of Georgia.
Defensive Lineman Jayson Ademilola
Jason Ademilola is the 127th ranked prospect overall and the ninth ranked defensive tackle. He is from Jersey City, New Jersey and is listed at 6’3 290lbs. Although he is big, Ademilola does a great job using low pad level to win the battle at the line of scrimmage. He also owns a handful of different moves he uses at the line to improve his pass rushing ability. Ademilola is the third ranked defensive tackle on the east coast and has the potential to develop into something special at Notre Dame.
Linebacker Matthew Bauer
Matthew Bauer is from Erie, Pennsylvania and is the 180th ranked prospect overall. Bauer has the ability to play both outside and inside linebacker in college, but will more than likely end up as an inside backer. He excels at filling running gaps and stuffing the run, but his pass coverage abilities leave a little to be desired. Bauer is listed at 6’3 208lbs and is the second ranked outside linebacker on the east coast.
Although Notre Dame’s 2018 recruiting class is off to a good start, it will still need to improve moving forward. It would be nice if Brian Kelly and the Irish coaches could add a few more highly ranked prospects. Only one top 100 commit and no five-star prospects is not an ideal recruiting class for a football program as prestigious as Notre Dame. There is still plenty of time between now and national signing day and hopefully, Brian Kelly and the Fighting Irish are able to take advantage.
