The Tennessee Titans open the 2017 NFL regular season with four tough games in a row. The team hosts the Oakland Raiders in week one before traveling to Jacksonville for a divisional matchup. Tennessee will then welcome the Seattle Seahawks to Nashville in week three and then visit Houston for another divisional game against the Texans. Not only will these games set the tone for the season, but they also each bear quite a bit of significance.
Oakland Raiders @ Tennessee Titans
Tennessee is desperate to open the season with a win after the way the season ended last year. The Titans still have a bad taste in their mouth and feel the roster is much improved. Oakland, however, will be a tough opponent as they could be one of the best teams in the conference this year. Marshawn Lynch will play his first game since coming out of retirement and young quarterback Derek Carr will be out to prove himself after receiving a max contract. The Titans should be able to pound the ball all game and open up the passing game. If the defense can get a few stops, Tennessee should open the season with a win.
Prediction: WIN (1-0)
Tennessee Titans @ Jacksonville Jaguars
This is a painfully important game for Tennessee in week two. Jacksonville has a much better squad this year and will get several wins throughout the season. The Titans always find a way to lose to this division rival at least once per year no matter how good either team is. Jalen Ramsey, Jacksonville’s second year stud cornerback, had a pick-six against the Titans last year and will wreak havoc on their young receivers. Tennessee will also struggle to run the ball against a very underrated front seven for the Jags. It should be a close game as the division will obviously be wide open this early in the year.
Prediction: LOSS (1-1)
Seattle Seahawks @ Tennessee Titans
Seattle will come to Nashville in week three and likely have the same record as the Titans at 1-1 as they face the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers in weeks one and two. The defense is still phenomenal and has a tendency to force several turnovers. Here is where the Titans match up decently with Seattle. Marcus Mariota does not turn the ball over very often as he only threw nine picks in 16 games last year. Running back DeMarco Murray fumbled the ball only three times last season as well. The Seahawks do not have a very good offense so if Tennessee can protect the ball they will win the game.
Prediction: WIN (2-1)
Tennessee Titans @ Houston Texans
If the Titans do end up losing to Jacksonville in week two, then this will become almost a must win game already. In order to make the playoffs and win a division, a team must win divisional games. The Titans failed to do that last year as the team went 2-4 in such games. The players know what is at stake, and the improved Titans defense will swarm a struggling Texans’ offense. Whether it be Deshaun Watson or Tom Savage, the Titans will have a better secondary to protect them from over the top plays. After losing cornerback A.J. Bouye to the Jaguars in free agency, Houston will struggle to contain Rishard Matthews, Eric Decker and Corey Davis.
Prediction: WIN (3-1)
