It may be a new season, but Liverpool and its problems are still the same. They can score but can’t prevent the other team from scoring. They had their moments on defense, but the good and great defensive teams do not just have “moments.” They are consistently good.
Liverpool again, like in the past, struggled to handle business against a lesser club in Watford. On paper, this should not have been a game at all. Scoring three goals should give you a comfortable win against a team that is much worse than you. But, because this is Liverpool, they were a defensive mess at times and allowed three goals that just should not have happened.
The first goal saw Roberto Firmino and others just not mark their guys on a corner and let the open guy score with a header. The second goal was just a collection of mistakes starting with a terrible throw-in. And the third goal? Well, of course, it came in stoppage time and off another set-piece (another corner). It is sad and disheartening to watch.
And the flip-side, the offense looked solid as usual. Sadio Mane’s opener was just a flat-out beautiful goal and could not have happened if not for his incredible work rate. The second goal showed that even if you are having an off game like Salah was having, speed can still kill. Salah got into space off a pass and was able to earn a penalty. And the third goal was another fine passing display.
So yeah, it was just like last year. Liverpool needs to get their defense in order if they have any hope of contending for the title. They can score with the best of them and probably do have the best offense. But that can only take you so far when you are making silly mistakes to give away free goals and dropping points against teams you are supposed to beat.
But who knows, maybe because Joey Barton favored Liverpool, they were cursed from the start.
If I was a betting man, I'd fancy Liverpool today. Watford fell over the line last season and can Marco Silva rejuvenate that dressing room?
