Summerslam is roughly a week away and after Raw and Smackdown this past week there have been 11 matches officially announced. Considering that Summerslam is scheduled to be a 4 hour show with a 2 hour pre-show it seems there may be more than 11 matches taking place over 6 hours.
Although there are almost a dozen matches taking place next Sunday there are only going to be a few that will stand out. Picking the top five matches on such a loaded show may seem tough but this year it was not. The following matches are the few reasons to watch Summerslam.
5. Smackdown Women’s Championship Match
Naomi (C) vs. Natalya
This match may not be getting that much attention but it will likely surprise many. Over the past year the Smackdown women have been given lots of opportunities and have delivered. Every woman on Smackdown has proven to be a viable contender for the Women’s Championship. Natalya proved to be the most worthy last month at Battleground when she beat four other women in an elimination match. Since then there has been more focus on Carmella possibly cashing in her Money in the Bank briefcase for a shot at the title. Despite Carmella looming in the background this should be a great match. Both women are underrated with Natalya being the most experienced woman on the roster. Naomi has held the title for months and despite her new changes to the title she should probably lose it here to either Natalya or Carmella.
4. WWE Championship Match
Jinder Mahal (C) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
The past few months of Jinder Mahal as champion have been quite the experience. Mahal, a former lower card wrestler, won the WWE Championship and beat Randy Orton at three straight PPVs. Considering Orton has been the only feud Mahal has had as champion this match is interesting. Shinsuke Nakamura only debuted on the main roster back in April. He has gone back and forth with a few guys but a win against John Cena in a great match earned him this shot. It is refreshing that since Nakamura is not American Smackdown will finally have a less xenophobic feud. This will be the biggest stage Nakamura has been on in WWE but Mahal has brought stability to the title. Just like in the Women’s Title match there is the looming presence of a Money in the Bank holder in Baron Corbin. If Nakamura does win it would not be surprising to see Corbin cash in on him.
3. United States Championship Match
Special Guest Referee- Shane McMahon
AJ Styles (C) vs Kevin Owens
While both Styles and Owens have wrestled each other many times over the past few months this match has a twist. By having Smackdown GM Shane McMahon as the referee there will not be bad calls like in the past two matches. It also raises tensions with the wrestlers as both Styles and Owens have had issues with McMahon. Both men are world-class talents and they should deliver one of the better matches on the show. Styles only won the US Championship a month ago and Owens has somewhat down played his Face of America gimmick. Styles should retain after Owens and Shane have issues that lead to a feud between the two for the fall.
2. Raw Tag Team Championships
Sheamus & Cesaro (C) vs Seth Rollins & Dean Ambrose
While this match has not been officially announced all signs point towards this match taking place. Last month, Rollins came to the aid of Ambrose after an attack from The Miz. Ever since that incident it has been teased that the former Shield members may reunite. Both men have been rather directionless over the past few months so putting them together as a tag team is a good idea. These four are all great in the ring and will deliver a memorable match. The current champions have held the titles for a while. It would be best to put the Tag Team titles on Rollins and Ambrose. These former WWE Champions could really elevate the titles. A win for them would also make a Shield reunion seem more likely.
1. Fatal Four Way Universal Championship Match
(If Brock Lesnar Loses He Leaves WWE)
Brock Lesnar (C) vs Samoa Joe vs Braun Strowman vs Roman Reigns
Brock Lesnar is the most exciting wrestler in WWE and this match is his most unpredictable in a long time. With the rumors of a Lesnar return to UFC the added stipulation makes the match more exciting. There has been an issue with multi person matches over the past few months but this is the best one in a long time. Every person has a reason to be in this match. Every challenger has been dominant this year with Reigns and Strowman constantly destroying each other and Joe almost beating Brock. This match promises to be a wild brawl with four huge mean beating the hell out of each other. While this match will be an all out war Lesnar will still walk out as champion. He has few more months in WWE and he needs to keep looking dominant.
