The Eagles sit at 1-1 entering their home opener versus their NFC East rival, the New York Giants, but they have a major concern growing on the offensive side of the ball. Carson Wentz looked above average to start the 2017 season playing against two solid defensive units. He is maturing on a weekly basis and continues to grow into the quarterback position. He is averaging 42 pass attempts and if he keeps that average he will finish with over 680 attempts on the year which will easily set the record for attempts for an Eagles quarterback. Surely, this would be impressive for a second year quarterback but an unbalanced offensive attack over an entire NFL season is not something that the Eagles organization should maintain.
Carson Wentz has answered the early pressure of being a young quarterback carrying the weight of the franchise on his shoulders. Through the first two games, he has only thrown 2 interceptions while maintaining poise in the pocket. While playing the Chiefs, Carson almost led a miraculous comeback falling just short with an incomplete Hail Mary to end the game. This resiliency not to give up is an intangible that can not be taught at the NFL level. However, asking a young quarterback to be resilient without a running game on a weekly basis is too much for any player let alone a player who is entering his second season in the league. The running game must become an important aspect for the Eagles to succeed in 2017.
There is not a better opponent to start establishing a running game than versus the Giants. The Giants are giving up an average of 133.5 yards per game on the ground and that ranks 27th in the league. Their entire team has struggled out the gate, which has led them to a highly disappointing 0-2 start. They are also off short rest playing on Monday night this week, which only enhances the Eagles chances. This match up is the perfect start for the Eagles, who saw their running game become a non factor in week two and was led by Carson Wentz, who finished the game with 55 yards on the ground. Darren Sproles led the Eagles with just 10 attempts which is not enough for a team focused on the playoffs.
The running game is important for any team to succeed in the NFL but for a young quarterback it is even more important to establish a running game. Carson Wentz can not be a franchise quarterback without the crutch of a running game to help him grow. The Eagles went out and made a huge splash in free agency and signed LaGarrette Blount, but have yet to figure out how to use him in their offensive scheme. The 2017 season is only two games in but if the Eagles want to compete for a NFC East division crown they must find a way to run the ball efficiently. If the running game is a non factor then the Eagles will become a non factor and the dreams of Eagles fans will be crushed.
