The Miami Dolphins will take on the New York Jets after defeating the Los Angeles Chargers 19-17. The Jets are coming off a 45-20 thrashing by the Oakland Raiders. Jay Cutler was sharp on his Miami debut, throwing for 230 yards and a touchdown. Jay Ajayi rushed for 122 yards, averaging 4.4 yards per rush. Josh McCown is having a subpar year so far throwing for two touchdowns, two interceptions and 353 yards.
Although making the playoffs and finishing with a 10-6 record, the Dolphins defense struggled last year. They boasted the 29th ranked defense, ranking 15th overall in the pass and 30th in the run. In just one game, they are the third worst. They allowed Philip Rivers to throw for 331 yards and post a 110.6 passer rating. Josh McCown may not have abilities that Rivers does but the Miami secondary will be tested.
The New York Jets defense has not performed well in their first two games. They currently rank last in rushing defense and 30th in yards per carry and yards allowed per game. This will give Jay Ajayi the opportunity to have another big game. Ajayi did not practice on Thursday with a knee injury but Miami says it is not serious. I could see Drake getting some increased reps to throw off the Jets and monitor Ajayi’s carries.
Jay Cutler had an effective first game. You can see that Gase was being conservative with his play calls but it’s hard to complain when Cutler threw no interceptions. The Miami offensive line performed relatively well against the Chargers, opening-up lanes for Ajayi and just allowing just two QB hits. The Jets defensive line was not present against the Raiders. They did not manage to get a QB pressure on 28 drop backs. If Miami can contain the New York defensive front like Oakland did, watch Jay Cutler open-up and take more deep shots to Stills and Parker.
Jarvis Landry, Jay Ajayi & Devante Parker are all listed as questionable for Sunday’s match-up but Miami says all of them will be ready by Sunday. Mike Pouncey sat out Thursday’s practice for safety measures. Jordan Phillips was still walking in a boot on Friday so we can see more reps for Davon Godchaux and Vincent Taylor. The Jets announced Saturday that starting right guard, Brian Winters will be out for the game. This gives players like Suh a better opportunity to get to the quarterback.
One of the biggest questions coming into the game is if Stephone Anthony will get some playing time. Miami traded a fifth-round pick to get Anthony earlier this week after suspending Timmons for going AWOL before last week’s game. His is leaving the Saints 3-4 scheme for a 4-3 base. He has experience in all three linebacker positions so he should have no difficulty adjusting when healthy.
I believe that Miami will prevail 27-17 behind a big offensive showing. Look for Cameron Wake’s name to be called more as he recorded three sacks against New York last season.
