There are not many perfect games played in the NFL but Sunday’s game against the Cardinals was as close as one will get to perfection on the gridiron. The Eagles dominated in all aspects of the game, which concluded with a 34-7 victory. From start to finish, the Eagles were in complete control and probably could have easily won by 40 if their coaching staff didn’t show the Cardinals team respect by taking it easy in the second half. Their record now sits at 4-1 and they sit at the top of not only their division but also the NFC. They are lucky enough to play Thursday this week vs. Carolina and this game could not have come at a better time for this team.
The Eagles are hitting on all cylinders and are looking like one of the most complete teams in the NFL and when that occurs teams want to play as fast as possible. Their confidence is at a season high right now and having only three days rest is probably a good thing for this team. Riding a three game win streak entering Thursday night and playing at home the fan base should be ready to welcome Cam Newton and the rest of the Panthers. If the Eagles get off to a fast start, this game might be over by halftime.
Though the Eagles defense has looked good this season, they have not faced a mobile quarterback, such as Cam Newton yet this year. The ones they have faced: Kirk Cousins, Alex Smith, Eli Manning, Philip Rivers and Carson Palmer are known for their arms and not their legs. Newton is one of the few players who fit the dual threat definition and might cause match up problems for this defense. This will be the first game this season where the defense has to scheme for a running quarterback and they might not be ready for such a match up.
The Panthers also come into the game with a 4-1 record and they also sit on the top of the NFC standings. Their most recent win came against a strong Detroit Lions team but the win that has been the most impressive for Carolina was when they traveled to Foxborough and defeated the defending Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots. This team is also oozing with confidence and their superstar, Cam Newton, has been playing lights out. His recent performances in the past two games has completely turned his team’s season around.
Both teams come into Thursday’s night game with huge expectations for victory considering their recent performances. Both teams seem to be on the upward climb entering the second half of the season. It would be easy to predict one of these teams playing in the Super Bowl in February and that is why it is extremely important for victory in this game. Hopefully for the city of Philadelphia, the Eagles can somehow game plan correctly against Newton and the offense. If so, that prediction of the Super Bowl for the Eagles becomes closer to reality.
