Michigan State basketball has been on a roll lately in their recruiting. In the past three months the Spartans have added four commits. Two in the 2017 class, Jaren Jackson and Xavier Tillman, and two for the 2018 class, Thomas Kithier and Foster Loyer. Loyer was added to that group today.
Loyer, a 6 foot point guard from Clarkston Michigan, committed to MSU. He brings a solid skill set which includes a decent shot, good leadership ability, and is a good passer. Paul Biancardi of ESPN compared Loyer to former Spartan great Scott Skiles.
Some Spartan fans have expressed concern about Loyer and his ranking on recruiting sites, as well as what this means for top 2019 point guard target Tyger Campbell. While this concern is understandable, I find it highly unlikely the MSU coaching staff would take Loyer’s commitment if they didn’t feel good about how Loyer will develop, and if it vastly affected the outlook for Tyger Campbell coming to MSU.
It would be beneficial for a team to have two true point guards on the roster. With Tum Tum Nairn graduating after the 2017-2018 season, Cassius Winston would have been the only point guard on the roster for the 2018-2019 season if the Spartans did not take a point guard in the 2018 class.
Clarkson HS standout PG Foster Loyer ( @FosterLoyer) just committed to Tom Izzo & Michigan State. A Scott Skiles type.
