Chris Wondolowski is the San Jose Quakes top scorer and has the most goals of any player in the MLS since 2009. In recent years Wondo has been called up to the United States national team. He mainly plays an attacking, poaching role. He seems to always be in the right spot at the right time.
For the United States national team, Wondolowski has nine goals in eleven appearances. That is a record most international strikers would be more than happy with. His hattrick against Belize in the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup is what really started to turn people’s heads towards the Quakes player as more than an MLS all-star.
Nobody was expecting the 30 year old MLS player to perform with such quality on a national level. Not only was he killing it in the MLS as the Quakes highest scorer, but he was doing exceptional in the international level. Most players on their international teams join well before they are 30 making Wondo’s late bloom into a national player all the more surprising.
Wondolowski has wanted to represent his country on the soccer pitch since he was a kid, and he has been working hard to achieve that goal. According to an interview with FIFA, Jurgen Klinsmann, the United States national team’s coach stated that, “In every training session he’s the first on the field and he’s ready to go, and he wants to prove it.”
Chico State is a division two soccer school, it is also the school Wondolowski went to, and played soccer for. You don’t see many international players have their roots in a division two school. It’s either division one, or straight to soccer academy for the biggest stars.
Through Wondolowski’s hard work and determination he has reached his ultimate goal. He realized this goal when he was younger during the 1994 World Cup. He remembers watching Brazil and wanting to be on that world stage more than anything, to represent his country in the beautiful game that is soccer.
With only a few more weeks until the World Cup, I am excited to see how the Quakes all-star is going to do. I believe that with some hope and determination, the U.S. can make it out of the group of death with Wondolowski leading the attack and leaving his mark on the world stage.
