When Manny Harris nailed that dagger triple from the corner and moments later found DeShawn Sims for a flush I was a happy Wolverine fan. Not only was I celebrating a huge win for Michigan, but I was breathing big sighs of relief because they did what they had to do to stay in contention for an at large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
So now Wolverine Nation turns their eyes to two things; the Big Ten Tournament (BTT) in Indianapolis and the Bubble.
We know Michigan will be playing Iowa on Thursday at 2:30 in the BTT. What a great chance to avenge the “Iowa City Debacle”. I think Michigan is in but a win Thursday should erase any remaining doubt. Click here for the BTT bracket.
I have heard Joe Lunardi, Doug Gottlieb, Jay Williams, Jay Bilas, and Dick Vitale all say Michigan is in. That is a good thing to hear so many different analysts say the same thing.
Strap on your Bubble Vision Goggles and let’s examine Michigan’s resume.
The first thing that should be pointed out is that Michigan’s record is 19-12 however; all the RPIs and other projections will show 18-12 because they do not factor in the Michigan Tech game because they are not a Division 1 team.
Michigan’s RPI is currently 42 with a Strength of Schedule that checks in as the 10th toughest schedule in the country. Those are both good numbers.
Michigan has 10 wins vs. the RPI Top 100 and 6 vs. the RPI Top 50. Again those are both good numbers.
Michigan has some impressive key wins; UCLA on a neutral court, Duke, Illinois, Purdue, and a season sweep of Minnesota.
According to CBS and ESPN Michigan currently projects in with a little bit of breathing room. CBS Sports projects Michigan as a 10 seed in their updated bracket. Joe Lunardi has moved Michigan off the bubble and has them projected in and he even moved them off the last four teams in list, which is good.
There you have it. Heading into Indy John Beilein and his Wolverines can seal the deal with a Thursday win. I still believe they are in regardless of what happens Thursday. However, I would be much more confident on Selection Sunday if they did win.
We will continue to monitor Michigan’s case throughout the week. Joe White should be chipping in with his views on this as well.
