The fab 4 and one sophomore. That’s what I am calling Oklahoma’s four fabulous freshmen(Steven Pledger, Andrew Fitzgerald, Tiny Gallon, and Tommy Mason-Griffin) and sophomore guard Willie Warren after their outstanding performance in the season opener today. They combined for 79 of the Sooner’s 95 points. All I can say is WOW! Not only that but Willie Warren and Tiny Gallon also both had double-doubles in the Sooners 95-71 route of Mount St. Mary’s.
The very first points of the game came off a fade away jumper from Tommy Mason-Griffin to push the Sooners to a 2-0 lead. From there, the game was pretty even until the Sooners used a 10-2 run to turn a 1 point deficit into a 7 point lead. However, Mount St. Mary’s wouldn’t back down as they then went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 23. The game continued to be even until the Sooners went on a 18-7 run which included 3 three-pointers(2 by Steven Pledger one by Tommy Mason-Griffin) to obtain a 49-36 lead at the half.
To start the second half Mount St. Mary’s went on an 8-0 run to cut the Sooner lead to 5. The good news for the Sooners was that, that was as close as it ever got and they went on to win the game 95-71.
The Sooners played a great game today and were led by “the fab 4 and one sophomore.” Steven Pledger really impressed me. He had 21 points and was 4-5 from three point range, however he is not my player of the game.
My player of the game goes to Willie Warren who recorded his first and certainly not last career double-double with 15 points and 11 assists. He also showed great leadership as you could tell he was the leader of this team.
Others of honorable mention are: Steven Pledger(21 points), Tiny Gallon(18 points, 15 rebounds), Tommy Mason-Griffin(11 points), and Andrew Fitzgerald(14 points, 5 rebounds). All of these players are freshmen and have room to grow and mature to make this team better.
From what I can take out of this game Oklahoma is a young but very talented team. You could tell by the way they let Mount St. Mary’s hang with them for so long. They also are an explosive offensive team, but they need to improve their defense.
Overall the Sooners played an amazingly good game today. “The fab 4 and one sophomore” were definitely the best players on the floor and I expect them to keep getting better. The Sooners next challenge will be on Nov. 17 against the UL-Monroe Warhawks as they try to push their record to 2-0. That’s all for now! Congrats to the Sooners on a great win against a decent Mount St. Mary’s team. See ya next article! Boomer Sooner!
