Good news came today for Florida football fans when it was announced that the Gators added Purdue graduate transfer quarterback Austin Appleby. This is welcome news considering the recent turmoil at quarterback for Florida with the announcement of Will Grier’s decision to transfer and Treon Harris’ continued struggles.
However Austin Appleby was not without his struggles while at Purdue. In 2015, he only completed 57.5% of his passes and 1,260 yards. He also completed the same amount of touchdowns as he did interceptions: 8. However, these numbers are lower than they could have been, as he lost his starting job to David Blough halfway through the year. In 2014, his numbers were similar despite starting the entire season. He threw for 1,449 yards and had 10 touchdowns to 11 interceptions.
While Austin Appleby may not be the answer, he does add depth to a quarterback position that currently is lacking. He will joining fellow transfer Luke Del Rio, early enrollee Feliepe Franks, and current struggling starter Treon Harris in competing for the starting job.
