Another season, another mess, the New York Knicks are currently sitting 14th in the East with a record of 25-38. Coming off a 17-65 season and with the additions of Arron Afflalo, Derrick Williams, Kyle O’Quinn, and Kristaps Porzingis the team looked to bounce back and make the playoffs this season. Fast forward to present day and the Knicks are on their way to not making the playoffs for a third straight season.
On Jan 22 the team was 22-22 and 10th in the Eastern Conference. Shortly after this the Knicks showed their true colors and went on a nine game losing streak. Many fans are irritated with the performance of this organization as the team has the talent to win games. The question many fans ask is who’s to blame?
The players are always the one’s who get blamed as they’re on the court playing and trying to win. New York is led by Carmelo Anthony who’s one of the best scorers in the NBA. Following Anthony is Arron Afflalo, Jose Calderon, Kristaps Porzingis, Robin Lopez, Derrick Williams, Langston Galloway, Kyle O’Quinn and Lance Thomas. In the beginning of the season the fans cut the team some slack as they were trying to come together as a team. After a while we’ve seen the inconsistent play from Arron Afflalo and Jose Calderon. Afflalo was brought in to be the second scorer behind Anthony, but his lack of scoring has him third on the team for scoring. Calderon has had trouble guarding opposing teams’ point guards this season and isn’t the same knock down shooter he once was. You put inconsistent scoring and bad defense together it usually adds up to the players taking the blame.
Derrick Fisher’s reign as head coach didn’t last long as he was fired Feb. 9th. In his first year Fisher wasn’t at fault with the team as the Knicks were in a rebuilding stage. Surrounded by talent in his second year, he still wasn’t able to get the team to play up to their ability. Also, having personal issues with Matt Barnes during the season didn’t help his case. After his firing Kurt Rambis was made interim head coach, where the team has only won two games so far. With playoffs out of reach Rambis is still hesitant about playing his younger players such as Jerian Grant and Cleanthony Early.
When the Knicks hired Phil Jackson as team president, many fans thought he would bring winning basketball back to New York. Phil, who’s won 11 rings in his coaching career, is looking to win a ring as team president. In his first season he traded both Iman Shumpert and J.R. Smith and drafted Cleanthony Early. He also signed Carmelo Anthony to a five year extension and drafted Kristaps Porzingis in his second offseason. With the team struggling the Knicks looked to add a point guard at the trade deadline in which they failed to do. Besides Phil, owner James Dolan is also to blame. The year before he hired Jackson, Dolan forced ex general mangaer Glenn Grunwald to trade a first round pick to the Toronto Raptors for Andrea Bargnani. That first round pick they traded can be a possible top 10 pick this season as the team is struggling.
