Fall is annually a busy time for college basketball coaches on the recruiting trail. Roy Williams, Head Coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels is no exception. As the first signing period vastly approaches, Williams once again juggles the tasks of coaching a team, while also recruiting players for the coming years. So far, he’s been pretty successful at bringing in talent for the 2017 class. The verbal commitments for the Tarheels in the 2017 class thus far are Jalek Felton, Brandon Huffman, Sterling Manley, and Andrew Platek. Although the class is already solid enough to fill most holes on the Tarheels roster next season, it sure would be nice if Coach Williams could reel in one or more five star recruits. Undecided players who hold scholarship offers from North Carolina include Kevin Knox, PJ Washington, and Jarred Vanderbilt.
There are several stories unfolding in the world of basketball recruiting at the moment that could affect North Carolina in a big way. From official visits to college decisions, here’s what’s going on.
Garrison Brooks sets his official visit
At 6-9 22olbs, Garrison Brooks uses his large frame to secure rebounds, and establish himself in the low post. He has the skills to become a dominant offensive presence at the college level. Brooks had originally planned to visit Chapel Hill last month, but instead, he opted to save his visit for a later date. This weekend, he will take his official visit to see what North Carolina has to offer.
PJ Washington is close to making his college decision
PJ Washington is a highlight reel forward who is capable of scoring in several different ways. This past summer, he displayed his explosiveness around the rim by finishing on several fast breaks while playing in the AAU Circuit. One of Washington’s biggest assets is his ability to run the floor in transition. Roy Williams has always loved to instruct his team to get out and run in an up-tempo offense.
Washington has steadily trimmed his list over the course of the past 6 months, leaving North Carolina, Kentucky, and UNLV as the remaining three schools. In the past couple of weeks, he cut Texas and Arizona from his list of remaining schools. Washington’s father has stated that he believes PJ will commit during the early signing period, meaning his decision will likely be delivered sometime between November 9th and 16th.
In my opinion, the fact that PJ has decided to commit early indicates that he may be headed to Carolina. It just makes sense. Why would he want to join a Kentucky squad this early when their is so much uncertainty about their 2017 roster? Typically, most Kentucky recruits will take their time and commit in the spring so they can evaluate and see who is returning for the upcoming season, as well as take a look at the incoming recruits who have already signed with Kentucky. I don’t expect UNLV to stand much of a chance in the recruitment.
