Throughout the NBA summer league in Las Vegas and Orlando all of the cameras were on the top picks making their debuts for their new NBA teams. The Phoenix Suns’s Josh Jackson, the Boston Celtics’s Jayson Tatum, and the LA Lakers Lonzo Ball were the center of attention as they constantly made headlines for their play. With all of the attention towards the top picks many ” under-the-radar” players made noise throughout the league . Many of those players including former Michigan State Spartan players.
Costello played his first season in the D-League for the Iowa Energy. Though he did not make a huge impact scoring the ball, Costello was one of the best rebounders in the league averaging over 10 boards a game and setting the new team record for rebounds in a single game with 25. Costello played for the Orlando Magic and the Minnesota Timberwolves’s summer league squads and made his noise through solid game stats as well as thundering dunks.
While playing for the Magic Costello was very underwhelming averaging just five points and four rebounds per game. When he shifted over into a Timberwolves jersey, the Costello that dominated the glass in the D-League emerged. Costello averaged 11 points and 12 rebounds a game while also shooting over 60% from the floor in four games while also throwing down some nasty slams.

As the summer league finishes up tonight Matt Costello will be crowned as the king of the crop as the best rebounder of all the players.
Forbes has made a habit making this name known in the Summer League. After winning the League MVP last season he was awarded with a contract from the Spurs. Forbes had a small role as a garbage time player for the San Antonio Spurs in 2016. With the way he played in the 2017 summer league he may find himself as a major role player in this upcoming campaign. Forbes was one of the most prolific scorers in the summer league while averaging just under 30 points a game which led the Las Vegas summer league teams. He shot the ball at 43% from the field and a clip of 48% from downtown.
Forbes continued to open people’s eyes when he scored 30+ points in three different games.

Forbes could have a huge roll for the Spurs being a “Danny Green” type player when coming off of the bench or possibly even starting.
Denzel Valentine played the most out of all Spartan rookies last season for the Chicago Bulls. Though not getting many chances to show his potential, when Valentine did see game action he was able to contribute for the Bulls. During the summer league he continued to show Chicago coaches how well he is able to run an offense. Though Valentine averaged just over 13 points as well as six boards and three assists per game for Chicago, his ability to push the ball up court and control the pace of play was the most impressive aspect of his summer performance.

With Rajon Rondo now residing in LA, Valentine should see his minutes continue to increase with more productive play.
