There are not many young footballers in Europe with the potential and talent that Joshua Kimmich possesses. Bayern Munich bought the youngster two years ago from Stuttgart. At the time, Kimmich was 19 years of age and plying his trade on loan for Germany’s most notorious club, RB Leipzig. Not many fans knew about the kid originally from Rottweil, Germany and even questioned then coach Pep Guardiola’s decision to sign him. Little did they know that they would be signing a player with the potential to be amongst Germany’s all time greats.
Kimmich has now played two seasons with the Bavarian club. During that timespan, the German international has made seventy-six appearances in all competitions This is a very impressive accomplishment for the twenty two year old, as there are or have been players at the club who play the same positions that Kimmich plays. These players include world-renowned stars such as, Xabi Alonso, Phillip Lahm, Arturo Vidal, Thiago Alcantara and Javi Martinez.
One of the main reasons why Joshua has succeeded thus far at Bayern is because of his versatility. Capable of playing as a defensive midfielder, central midfielder, right back and center back, Joshua has been able to fill in at all positions and perform at a high level. Last season, Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti typically played Kimmich in a central midfield position. This gave the youngster the freedom to make runs inside the box and wreak havoc on his opponent’s defense. Playing in a more advanced role than usual, this resulted in Kimmich scoring nine goals in all competitions. Bayern have a lot of quality and depth at the central midfield position this season. With the new signings of Corentin Tolisso and James Rodriguez, it would be hard for Kimmich to play at central midfield for Bayern this season. Plus, the club still have Thiago Alcantara and Arturo Vidal within their ranks and both are expected to play a major role in Ancelotti’s midfield this season.

The most likely position that Kimmich will play in this season is right back. With captain fantastic, Phillip Lahm retiring at the end of last season, Bayern are in need of a player who can fill the boots of one of the greatest defenders in modern history. Step right up, Mr. Joshua Kimmich! Undoubtedly, Joshua has already proven to be a more than capable replacement for Phillip Lahm. Starting for the German National Team at both the Euro 2016 tournament and the Confederations Cup this past summer, the youngster impressed on the big stage and made the German fans a little more confident about replacing the legendary Lahm. He was so prolific at right back that he was even named on the team of the tournament at Euro 2016. In only twenty appearances for the Die Mannschaft, Kimmich has already recorded two goals and nine assists from the right back position. This is extremely impressive considering the fact that Dani Alves, regarded as the best right back in world football right now, only recorded one assist for the Brazilian national team in the same amount of games played.
Joshua is a player who has already proven what he is capable of on the big stage. After witnessing his masterclass performances for Germany over the past two summer tournaments, Ancelotti will surely provide Kimmich with the playing time that he needs to thrive at Bayern this season. Although, the Italian national has a wealth of talent to choose from, there is certainly no way that Kimmich will be overlooked to play this season. In fact, Expect Germany’s number one right back to become a regular starter and one of Bayern’s most important players this season. As long as the club are able to keep Kimmich away from the riches of the premier league and La Liga in the near future, Kimmich should be an indispensable player for the Bavarian club within the next decade.
