As the Philadelphia Eagles trotted off FedEx field on Sunday, the team felt very impressed with themselves. They just defeated one of their division rivals on the road to start the 2017 season. All phases of the team looked mightily impressive. The defense had some huge turnovers including the fumble recovery at the end of the game to seal the fate for the Washington Redskins. The offense looked equally as impressive but the one player who stood out among the best of them is quarterback Carson Wentz. Not known much for his mobility, Carson Wentz stole the show with his ability to avoid the pass rush and showed the NFL community that he is more mobile then he looks.
One play stands out when discussing Carson’s secret skill of mobility, when the the Eagles were faced with an early third and 12 on their own 42 yard line.nThe pocket collapsed early in the play and Carson miraculously escaped the defensive line of the Redskins. Narrowly escaping two different defenders, Carson was able to step up in the pocket find a wide open Nelson Agholor, for a 58 yard touchdown while only sustaining a minor hit from the Redskins front four. Though this touchdown only opened the scoring for the Eagles on Sunday, this was by far the most important play for a variety of reasons.
This early Houdini like escape completely changed the focus for the Redskins defense and kept them guessing all day. Carson is known for his arm and accuracy but his mobility was never a strength for the second year quarterback. By showing the Redskins he is able to escape pressure, Washington had to second guess blitzing Carson Wentz and the Eagles were able to take advantage of this all game. The Eagles were able to throw for 307 yards while only giving up two sacks.
Not only was this play important for the confidence of a young quarterback but this key play also improved the confidence of the young wide receiver, Nelson Agholor. Nelson’s constant struggles was a huge major story line in the 2016 season for the Eagles and fans were calling for the team to cut ties with the former first round pick. To start a season like that, only three minutes into the first game must have been just what Nelson needed to change his reputation. Agholor finished the game with six catches for 86 yards but it is not the stats that tell the story of his game on Sunday. Carson targeted Nelson eight times overall and Nelson’s play did not warrant any Eagles fans to call for his removal from the organization.
Sure it’s only one play but this play will not only go down as a game changer but this might also be a season changer for the Eagles. The connection between young quarterback and wide receiver might have been formed on this touchdown reception. Time will tell regarding how the Eagles react to a week one victory but it is certain that a play like that will have a positive impact for the entire team. The season opener for the Philadelphia Eagles and their die hard fans was a successful one. Hopefully, the team can upheld the momentum they created in the City of Brotherly Love.
