The Kansas City Chiefs have opened the season 3-0 and have been playing great football. They began the season beating the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots and have followed that with wins over both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Los Angeles Chargers. Many believed the Chiefs would take a step back this season after finishing the year 12-4 last season, but so far they have done everything but. With running back Spencer Ware being injured during the preseason, it forced the Chiefs to look elsewhere for help out of the backfield. The Chiefs drafted rookie Kareem Hunt in the third round of this year’s draft and has been arguably the best player in the league to this point.
Hunt had a great career at Toledo, rushing for nearly 5,000 yards, with 44 touchdowns and averaged 6.3 yards per carry over four years, and 8.0 yards a carry his sophomore season. Three games into his NFL career, he has not lost a step. Hunt already has over 400 yards on the ground, with four touchdowns and a 8.5 yards per carry average. Hunt also has nine receptions for 137 yards and two scores as well and has proven he can be just as dangerous in the passing game.
At 5’11” and 216 pounds, Hunt is very difficult to tackle and has already made numerous defenders miss en route to his six touchdowns in three games. The loss of Spencer Ware definitely put a dark cloud over the team, especially since he has not seen a minute of action in the regular season. Hunt has done more than his share, however, in the absence of Ware, and in a way could benefit the team when Ware returns, having multiple options in the backfield.
Kareem Hunt has taken the league by storm so far and has helped solidify the Chiefs as one of the best teams in the entire league. Hunt has created balance in the Chiefs offense and has given Alex Smith a third elite option, alongside Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill. Hunt allows the Chiefs to open up the passing game, by keeping opposing defenses honest and having them always respect the running game. Hunts value cannot go unnoticed as he has helped make the Chiefs one of the most dynamic offenses in the NFL.
The Chiefs were surprised with the production of Tyreek Hill a year ago and now have once again hit in the draft with Kareem Hunt. The team will look to build off their strong 3-0 start next week as they take on the Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football.
