Ben Roethlisberger cost the Pittsburgh Steelers the game last week, simple as that. Before the Hall of Fame quarter back’s implosion, the Steelers were up 9-7 on the Jacksonville Jaguars. Then, Roethlisberger did something he’s never done before, he panicked.
In total, Roethlisberger finished with five interceptions for the game and most importantly, a busted-up ego. After the game, Roethlisberger stated in the press conference that he, “might not have it anymore.” Clearly, statements like this can’t be taken too seriously after a brutal loss, but it is something to note.
Roethlisberger has always been the leader of the team, even going back to his early days. On this roster, more than ever, he needs to be that leader. With the amount of high level talent this team possesses, Roethlisberger and Coach Mike Tomlin are going to need to be the voices of reason.
What’s scary to me is an admission like this from Roethlisberger shows me how on the edge he is. Yes, I expect him to bounce back this week and show why he’s so great again, but it also leads me to believe that he is not far from being pushed over the edge. That is not what this team needs. This team needs a constant leader who is completely confident in his abilities and knows that when the big moments arise, he will make the winning plays.
This week against Kansas City will be a huge moment in the season for this team. Kansas City has been rolling and are the only remaining undefeated team in the entire NFL. The Steelers, coming off their worst loss of the season, will need to show resilience in the face of this pressure. And no one will be facing more pressure than Roethlisberger.
A vintage performance from Roethlisberger will go a long way to reminding us why the Pittsburgh Steelers are championship contenders. Another poor performance from Roethlisberger might warrant the opposite. This team needs their leader to step up and show his grit. Will Roethlisberger meet the challenge head on and have a great game or are his best days behind him? Sunday, we will find out.
