Formula 1 heads to the Austin, Texas next week for the United States Grand Prix. Only four races remain in the 2017 season but both the Constructor and Driver Championships have yet to be determined. Mercedes, however, has the chance to win both on the Circuit of the Americas this upcoming Sunday.
While it is possible, Lewis Hamilton will have to get 16 points more than Sebastian Vettel to claim his fourth World Championship. Ironically, that would make Hamilton even with Vettel in terms of Driver Championships. If Hamilton wins on Sunday, Vettel would have to finish lower than fifth place for the Championship to be decided.
The Constructor Championship gets a little more complicated to determine a victor. In all likeliness, Mercedes will go home with the championship again as they hold 145 points on Ferrari. By doing so, they will have won the last 4 Championships, all with the help of Lewis Hamilton, former driver Nico Rosberg, and newly acquired Valtteri Bottas. Ferrari still has the chance to win, but they would both have to finish ahead of the pack in the remaining four races and Mercedes would have to score little to no points. However improbable, this still gives Ferrari a very slim chance to turn the tables on Mercedes as the dominant force in Formula 1.
A very plausible result of the United States Grand Prix, is that Mercedes takes home both the Constructor and Driver Championship’s. This would most likely come from Hamilton and Bottas both finishing on the podium, if they are able to overtake Ferrari and Red Bull.
On top of this, Mercedes could have an incredible season if Bottas can stay a few positions ahead of Vettel for the remaining four races. This would mean Mercedes would have the best 2 drivers of the season, which would definitively conclude they were the best team of the year.
Fans will see if Mercedes is able to pull off such a feat Sunday in Austin, Texas.
