Although the Cleveland Cavaliers made it to the NBA Finals they still made some changes in their locker room. They traded two key players from last season in Kyrie Irving and veteran Richard Jefferson. But also added multiple new players; Jae Crowder, Jeff Green, Derrick Rose, Isaiah Thomas, Dwyane Wade, and Ante Zizic. Let’s take a look at the five reasons I believe they will be better this season:
- Bench: The problem with last year’s bench was that it did not contain any playmakers and the Cavaliers struggled to produce bench scoring. They mainly relied on Richard Jefferson to be the spark off the bench. Now this season after moving J.R. Smith and Tristan Thompson to reserve players their bench will include three players that were starters last season once Isaiah Thomas becomes healthy and Derrick Rose moves to back up point guard. No other team in the NBA will have the privilege of having three starters playing as reserves. Jeff Green is an excellent cutter and also an athlete that the Cavaliers just did not have coming off the bench last season. The Cavaliers also still have sharpshooter, Kyle Korver, adding to their bench depth and defender Iman Shumpert. Now that Thompson is a reserve player they won’t have to rely on undersized Channing Frye to defend the center position. When you analyze the Cavaliers bench they have Rose, Korver, Smith, Green, and Thompson all players that have been a starter at one point and could still possibly start on several teams. With such depth, I think this is the main reason they will be better this season.
Chemistry: LeBron James and Dwyane Wade have a natural chemistry. They are best friends off the court and you can tell on the court. They know where each other like to play on the floor and also where and when they like passes. I think this great relationship will spread throughout the rest of the team building a great chemistry. Jae Crowder will also help with team chemistry. Crowder is a player that can be considered as the glue of a team. He hustles and plays hard and is willing to do whatever it takes to make his team better.
- Fun: Sometimes the NBA can become so serious and players forget the reason they started playing basketball. And that’s because they enjoy it and to have fun. The Cavaliers seem like they are going to have fun this year. They have a bunch of players that are happy to be in Cleveland and it shows on the court. This year I don’t think the Cavaliers are feeling pressured but instead, they are just enjoying the game of basketball.
Minutes: Head Coach Tyronn Lue and his coaching staff have a problem that most coaches would love to have. They have multiple players that all are deserving of minutes and can contribute. Last season they struggled with finding time for their starters to rest but now they have several players they have to figure out how to distribute minutes between.
- Kevin Love: This off-season Love has received no pressure to produce. Besides moving to starting Center Love hasn’t found himself in many headlines this summer. I think this lack of pressure is going to be the key to Love having his best season since becoming a Cavalier. He already began the season off right, hitting a clutch three-pointer with under a minute remaining.
